The Movie Thread

I really enjoy all of the Harry Potter movies. I never bother to read the book because I am lazy, but the movies are really good.

My top two fave movies as of right now are:
Clerks
Clerks II

No matter how many times I watch them both over and over and over...
Nothing can make me laugh as hard as 37 dicks and the donkey show.

ive always hated reading books. but after the second harry potter movie, my kid begged me to read the next one to figure out what happned next. I actually found it so interesting that I read all of them. I have NEVER read a book from cover to cover before in my life. but that was some good reading. I havent raed anything else since then, but my kid thinks im the harry potter genius.

you should read them tag. its good stuff.

Back to the future & goonies are on my top 5 list for sure!!!

i would for sure do that. unfortunatly i have no idea when its coming out. Ill check that out for sure. but hell yeah ive done it for the last 3 movies. half blood prince I thought was the least exciting of all the books. Not a bad book dont get me wrong. but my least favorite of the series.

expecto patronum!!!!!!!!

damn im such a nerd!!!

'Ey, a movie thread. Last one I paid money to see was Gran Torino, which was awesome. Not unexpected since Clint Eastwood is such an amazing actor/director/all around classy dude.

Most other movies I watch are the ones that I project for work (part-time projectionist at my university theater)... this weekend's a double-feature, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

RE: HBP. I'm not that fond of the last 3 books of the HP series, but the movies are always spectacles of crazy effects and art direction at the very least. So I'll probably see it opening weekend, they're good movie-movies.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE ON A SPOTLESS MIND!!! Seriously, this is the best movie I have ever seen. Incredibly emotionally driving, it's- it's just fantastic. Watch Now. [/orgasm]

Back to the Future will always have a place in my heart.

I liked the books..the movies... not so much. They lose a lot of thier special feel and magic. Now I can understand your position though tag cuz you never read the books and the premise is actually interesting. Actually the same goes for LoTR. Generally long books=win against their movie counterparts.

And I guess I'm biased against the movies cuz every time I have to watch them by taking some little fuck I'm looking after to the movie. I had to leave an Imax that I took my ex-gf little sister with us to because she got scared o.O. One before that I saw with my dad's new wife's daughter (I'd call her my step sis but I'd have to shoot myself before I finished the phrase). Before that I watched with my annoying little cousins. Yea...generally harry potter movies bring in the little girls... o.O .. and sadly interests the teenage girls so the mac'in drops down to zero. .... ....and THAT is why 16 blocks (anyone ever see that?) is a GREAT first date movie...lol.

And now to a movie... FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL for the fucking WIN!

Edit: Its eternal sunshine of the spotless mind....not on..lol. And that movie is a plus or a HARD minus depending on your mood. That is the type of movie that you can watch and be a great movie on one day and the most depressing shit you've ever seen on another. I wonder what the suicide rate caused by ppl watching that movie after a break-up is.... ....

Witchcraft/Satanism/Harry Potter = bad. You should see the Love Guru = funny!

Witchcraft/Satanism/Harry Potter = bad.

Please, please tell me you're only joking.

ALSO: When quoting the line "It's just a flesh wound" people will now quote from the movie Taken instead of Monty Python. What a great line.

thats not the first time ive heard that statement bout harry potter. there are a few very religious people at work that will not let thier kids see that harry potter stuff, cause they think is satanic.

I can see where that argument would come from. But I think jk rowling sheds a differnt light on "witchcraft" that is not portrayed that way. Then again the villians in the books might portray that. forgot where i was going with this point that I had. so i digress

A number of schools and toy shops have banned Harry Potter books and merchandise because they lead children to the occult.

Then why haven't they banned Snow White, Shakespeare, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, or any other book with magic/fantasy in them?

Harry Potter does NOT lead children to the occult, there's nothing ABOUT the occult in them. People who say there is haven't READ the damned things. They can't give any supporting evidence because they don't actually have any. This is what happens when you lead a life in fear.

i totally agree with you. i dont believe that harry potter of all things leads to anything but a good read. bring up the snow white, shakespear etc, was a great argument. I tend to find its the really religious people that have an issue with this. not knocking religion, im just not religous i guess, but leave it to some people that interprut a book a certain way to over exagerate the simplist thing.

Wow thanks for the tip. That's now a must see.

Xenia Onatop/Jean Grey: Check.
Darkman/Qui Gon Jin: Check
Hot chick from lost: Check.
Lack of Will Smith: Check plus.

This movie gets a passing grade from me.

Harry potter leads kids into the occult? People probably think this because unlike the heroes of most fantasy productions the heroes are children who live in our world and learn to cast spells. As a somewhat religious person myself I have no problem with it. Most of the people who hop on these sorts of bandwagons are ignorant idiots who'll just as soon hop on any bandwagon that pulls up. Then again these people can't help that they're idiots and a lot of powerful people have a lot of money invested in making them believe the world is eroding under their feet. Some people just have sticks up their asses, and not the kind you use to play Quidditch. Taking the time to read the books would allay any fears, and letting kids read them should only lead to an appreciation of reading.

Books VS Movies: Well a movie's a lot quicker, but if we're talking about the movie version of a book then books all the way. I hate what hollywood does to good books. Watch the theatrical release ending to bladerunner and you'll see what I'm talking about. Sure, eventually that mistake was rectified, but the majority never are. I also read Jurassic park before it was ever a movie, The lawyer, Genaro was one of my favorite characters, in the book he's just a man trying to get back to his family who kills a pack of raptors in their den with a lead pipe, marches miles on a broken leg evading carnivorous pursuers, saves comely young virgins from the altars of snake-cults and blows a Tyrannosaurus Rex off the top of Nakatomi tower. Did I mention this Tyrannosaurus was flying an f-14 and gloating in your least favorite foreign accent? Yeah. Flash forward to the movie and he's just a cowardly, slimy comic foil for anybody who was sick to hell of the OJ Simpson trial.

I suppose as an author having your book made into a movie would be something of a mixed blessing. On the one had you can't beat the exposure a movie can lend your work, on the other a poorly handled adaptation might not be something you generally want people to see. Then you might run into a scenario where people love the movie based on your book but the story was so badly truncated or altered that you despise it for it's success.

So what am I trying to say? Hell if I know. Maybe if you're not much of a reader, go ahead and go see the movie, nothing's wrong with that. But you know, you might like the book if you tried it and movie adaptations aren't any kind of substitute. Usually they're more like a primer. It's also amazing how dumb screen writers usually think you are. Also nice work getting to the bottom of this post.

Also Mickey Roarke was nominated last night for an academy award for his performance in the wrestler. I been saying he'll take it. It's all coming together.

Hahaha harsh fanboyism fail. I've only seen it once though. You're right, it's really depressing. I tried to watch it again but I couldn't because I knew what was going to happen. That's just how good it is.

actually same... I only saw it once and don't really want to see it again honestly (but it was good albeit depressing). I'm like that with most movies anyway. Some people like watching movies again and again but I really have a hard time doing that anymore (its one thing when you watch star wars 100 times when you are eight...another when your 18 or 20 or 30..)
