Modding SoulCalibur 3

Ooofmatic

World Warrior
In order to mod the game you'll need a few things:

  • A Modified PS2
  • A DVD Burner
  • DVD R's (preferably brand names, remember to burn at 1x-2x speed) - You'll need a lot of these incase you screw up.
  • As an alternative to burning DVD's, you might be able to do this if you have a PS2 harddrive attachment, but I've never had one so I'm not sure.
  • You can probably also do this using a PS2 emulator on the PC.

In the SC3 files, there is a file called ROOT.OLK. Use OLK Explorer (see attached file), to open it.

Now, it might seem confusing at first, but thanks to my blood and sweat, I documented most of what's in there:

Use OLK Explorer to swap whatever you want (just make sure it doesn't freeze the game).

For example, if you want to replace Talim's 2P costume, with Lizardman's 1P costume, you would have to use OLK explorer to export File 142 (.pkg) in File7.olk (Lizardman's 1P), and then import and replace File 214.pkg (Talim 2P). If you want to replace Mina 1P color editable costume with Mitsu's 2P color editable costume, then you would have to replace File 29.pkg (Mina 1P edit) with File 18.pkg (Mitsu 2P edit).

Something more interesting would be to replace a character with Colossus or NightTerror.

The same thing could be done for movesets and stages. Just swap the moveset files or stage files that you want. I don't have them fully documented, but if you can find them, you can even swap ending "stages" with normal ones and play in them. Here is Rock and Talim on Kilik/Xianghua's ending stage:
. Most of those special stages are a bit glitchy though, they don't have proper collision detection and sometimes you fall right through the floor.

Swapping movesets is pretty fun too. You can use Colossus' moveset on a normal character if you swap it, and it's pretty comical how they move so sluggish. Although NightTerror's doesn't work for some reason, it will freeze the game. If you really want to use Night Terror though, you can just download Action Replay Max, and enable him with a code. Another funny thing is you can swap a normal moveset with an exhibition moveset file. As soon as the match starts the character will go into their kata. And the opponent can walk around and watch them. Although if you hit them out of their demonstration the game will freeze.

SC3 mod video:

SC3:AE on PS2

A while back I was trying to get SC3:AE to work on PS2, it never really turned out the way I hoped. I got my hands on the AE ROOT.OLK files, but they just weren't 100% compatible. I did get a few things working though:

  • SC3:AE Title Screen
  • Inferno's game model (he was in SC3 AE only)
  • SC3:AE Hwang, Amy, and Li Long

I've attached those files. To get the AE title screen just replace file 761.pkg in File5.olk with the attached file. You can even replace a normal stage with it if you want and fight with the title screen as a stage. :P

For some reason I could only get SC3:AE Hwang, Amy, and Li Long's movesets working properly. I never got a chance to get the other ones working so that I could have a fully working SC3:AE for PS2... perhaps when I get my modded PS2 back from my friend I'll look into it more...

But for now at least we have those three. If you want to have those three playable though, you won't be able to use the normal cast. They will be kind of glitched out. Because on top of adding those moveset files, you'll need to add some more files that change the 'core' gameplay, (hit stun effects etc). If you add the AE movesets without doing this, then they will be glitched out, but if you DO do it, the AE movesets will work properly but the normal PS2 movesets will be glitched. I've added those extra files as well.

That's all for now. Happy modding, and remember to always keep backups of your originals!
I'll probably make an SC2 modding guide sometime in the future and include all of my old modded files. Stay tuned!

Good try, Oofmatic.

Hoping you can figure these things out. Having AE for PS2 would be kickass.

I still wonder why Namco didn't release it for console.

Amazing stuff. If you want, I could try to send you files from my version B disc. Maybe if you could tell which files were different between versions, you could deduce more about what files serve what purposes, and what's needed to adapt the main cast.

hi im new here, you might know me from youtube but anyway if i edited the root.olk then could i replace it within a sc3 iso file?

That would be great! Unfortunately I don't have my modded PS2 right now, but when I get it back I plan to get back into modding the game.

You have to extract the contents of the ISO file, and then once you modify the root.olk, replace the old one and repackage the ISO.

What programs do you use to make the modded iso then burn it to a dvd-r?

I don't really understand why there would be A, B and C versions of SC3AE. I thought they tried it, deployed it, it flopped, and that was it. It's hard to imagine that they patched it, considering what it was alleged to be all about in the first place. Obviously, I'm sad to know that I seem not to have the final version. I wonder what the differences are, I wonder if version A was a non-release version (I've never seen an A version of SC2), I wonder if C is the System 256 version, etc... Mysterious.

It's funny how issues like that expose the giant information gaps that will always exist even on the Internet.

Is the OPM demo version of any interest for modding purposes? That thing is fascinatingly raw all over. Maybe its basis is less secure and more open.

I tried putting some of these discs in my computer the other day. I was fascinated just to see that the files are all visible and somewhat clearly labeled. I would have expected the discs to be totally incomprehensible to my PC.

So on this SC3AE version is the bgm different?, I looked on wikipidia and it said there were different modes one of them being ledgens mode, is this like chronicles of the sword on the console version?

I actually ported the OPM demo movesets to the complete game when I first started modding SC3. I got the movesets working, but I wasn't able to fix the hit stuns and effects. They were all out of place.

I even made a video showing off all the demo exclusive moves that the characters had, you can see them here:

Talim was very interesting. She was a hybrid of SC3 and SC2 Talim. She had all her old SC2 stuff like the BT auto-GI's and some of her old strings.

In that video you can also see an incomplete SC2 Lizardman moveset, together with an unused yellow SC2 Lizardman model.

That one is actually hidden in the complete game. It's in the files near the bonus characters, and if you look closely you'll see that he is right handed. Lizardman only became left handed in SC3.

My theory on that prototype Lizardman was that it was a bonus character scrapped at the last minute, and that he was supposed to wield two axes/swords. When I tested him out, he had attacks that used both hands as if he didn't have a shield...

SC3:AE on PS2???

WOW!!! hope you can success and please share with us ^^

can you teach me how to change the SC3 to SC3AE please? ^^

When you say a dvd burner which one do you use to burn the files and can you just burn the files on the disk or do you have to create an iso then burn it?

btw i made sc2 stage mods myself ^.^

in this clip i have modded the dds textures in the stages along with ivys moveset on seoung minas moveset !

Yeah, you have to replace the original root.olk file with the modified one, and then repackage the files into an ISO, and burn the disc.

I can do all that just fine but i cant find the programs needed like cd dvd rom generator what method do you use to rebuild?

hmm.. try PowerISO or ImgBurn. Though I'm pretty sure MagicISO worked for me a while back.

hmmm i have both power iso and magic iso and they both of the iso's wont work could you tell me what setting you have to rebuild the iso with magic iso?

hmm... I don't really remember. It's been over 2 years since I worked on modding SC3, and I don't have that program anymore. So I can't really say. Just search around on google i guess, I'm sure you'll find an answer. It's not like repacking SC3 into an ISO is any different than doing it to any other game.
